Deputy Secretary General of the East African Community (EAC) Dr Christopher Bazivamo has asked all EAC member States to unite in implementing a grand women empowerment project for the best interest of all six nations in the region.
The project dubbed (50 million African Women Speak Networking) is equally implemented also by members of ECOWAS and COMESA.
The Deputy Secretary General issued an advice earlier this week during the official opening of a seminar for journalists on the (50 Million African Women Speak Networking) which is implemented by EAC in six member states.
According to him, the project aims at uniting women in six countries to receive crucial information on business, finance and marketing between their countries and other African countries which are members of ECOWAS and COMMESA, adding that all the information would be obtained in the official EAC website.
The coordinator of the National project Focal Person, Mr. Mapunda John Ansgar said Tanzania’s ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children was given a task to coordinate the project in the country so as to unite women entrepreneurs to get information on business between Tanzania and other EAC member states.
“This project is implemented by EAC, and member states of ECOWAS and COMMESA and its main objective is empowering women economically,’’ he said, adding:
“On financial information we target information on where to access loans and grants so that they can have capital for their business.’’
He added that another major objective of the project was to ensure that the right information was accessed by women and that is why, EAC decided to establish an official website where all information would be obtained.
He said that in the programme, EAC plans to have one centre where all women would be meeting regularly to discuss issues pertaining to business as well as sharing experience.
He said the involvement of media representatives was crucial because through the media the targeted personnel would be able to access information, adding that the target was to reach out 10 per cent of women who represent 50 million people in EAC, COMESA and ECOWAS.
