28 cities now operate 24 hours a day
The government has asked the contractor for the 28 Ifakara town water project to work 24 hours a day to deliver water services to citizens as soon as possible.
Deputy Minister for Water Hon. Engineer Kundo Andrew Mathew (MP) said while inspecting the project on October 2, 2026 that the decision to work in this way will ensure the project is completed on time.
The project is being implemented at a cost of 48 billion shillings, involving the construction of a dam, a water processing and treatment plant, and the construction of a water storage tank with a capacity of 4 million liters, where implementation has currently reached 71 percent and will serve more than 80,000 citizens.
He said that for the remaining time, considering the upcoming rainy season, the contractor should plan the schedule well to complete the project on time so that the people of Ifakara and surrounding areas can receive clean, safe and reliable water services.
The project is a major investment by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania.
Hon. Kundo has visited the Lumeno River area which was cut off and shifted its course due to the large amount of water flowing through the river during the rainy season.
He has directed the Director of the Water Resources Department, Ministry of Water, Mr. Robert Sunday, in collaboration with experts, to ensure that the work of returning the displaced section of the river to its course is carried out to avoid any potential harm.
